She pulled me out of the pond
In bright flowered skirts
she trimmed our nails and
taught us the magic of popping corn
Imagination as panacea
Progressive when Republican
devoted to Dr. Spock,
Civil Rights, fair housing
and all the many Ministries
Committees and Urban Causeways
Marching for Peace at the Pentagon!
Not Republican
telling me, “It could be worse.”
Making sure it wasn’t
